"We were only in Washington for a few days but the 'DC by foot' tour was definitely a highlight. The guides were knowledgeable about all the sights (and there were a lot), well spoken and damn funny! We saw some of the best bits of DC and got some good stories too - I was very impressed. They even answered all our questions. The tour was over an hour and thoroughly enjoyable - and free! Even if you're only in Washington for a day or two, you must NOT miss this tour."

Ben and Brody,

I just want you to know how much my daughter and I enjoyed your tour!!
We spent four days, sun up to sun down, touring your fabulous city
either by ourselves or on various tours and yours, by far, was the most
entertaining!! Be assured we will pass along information on your tour
to anyone we know back here in Minnesota traveling out to DC.
I'm so glad I came across your website when planning our trip.

Thanks again for a delightful time...you guys are great!!

Brody, we really believe that you are our tour angel. We were upset about missing a couple of buses and getting over to DC later than we had expected, but if it weren't for that, you wouldn't have been walking by to overhear our conversation and invite us to the tour. It was really the highlight of our trip. We hope to come again soon! Love, the first people to ever take a picture with the White House aka the Kansas Girls

Hi Ben,
I participated in three of the many tours offered during WALKING TOWN, DC on Sunday, September 30th, 2007. All the guides were very good and informative however yours was by far the most entertaining. I was surprised to find out later in the day that many different companies were participating in WALKING TOWN, DC and I regretted not having picked up one of your brochures. Obviously I have since found your sight and saved it to my Favorites. I will be referring your tour whenever I have visitors. PS: I know you are very fair. I try to avoid sunlight myself and I kept wondering when you would do the same. So when you commented on the obvious I could not help but laugh. Your performance had me pretty wound up and your delivery felt like another punc h line. I hope I didn't make you feel self conscious. You're a funny guy and I think your radiant personality will be its own spot light where ever you perform even in the shade.

Hello,
My name is Francisco. My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of being guided through the national mall (or most of it) by BEN this past weekend Sept. 29 2007. I just wanted to shoot an email guys to not only thank you but also to congratulate you for such a fun and amazing way to guide tourists through the national history and events.
We had a blast and the way Ben explained the events and the history behind those places was really engaging.
THANKS A BUNCH! Keep on going with this amazing project.

Hi Ben and Brody,

I am Hasan from virginia and by chance attended your dcbyfoot tour. It was so interesting and funny and enjoyable. Me and my family liked it a lot. We will certainly recommend your tour to our friends. Also my parents appreciated your creativity of opening up your own venture about American history. As history is so boring to read. We all wish you good luck on your tours and hope to attend some more in future.
Your tour was definitely unique then what wee have attended in England and USA.

Anonymous said...

Ben,

I am so glad I didn't let Tina "The Skeptic" sway my decision as to whether or not to attend your tour as we sat on the benches at the Washington Monument waiting for it to start. Not 20 minutes into the tour she told me, "I really like this guy." and admitted I was right that it would be a lot of fun. Your entertaining stories and facts about each of the monuments was truly the "icing on the cake" that most people visitng DC will never learn about unless they take your tour! Your energetic presentation and humor made it our most favorite experience of our DC visit. I have already recommended it to some friends that will be coming to DC soon. Hopefully Brody is feeling better and back in action soon. I can only imagine what it would be like with both of you giving the tour! Best of luck to both of you in your business adventure and keep up the great work!

DC by Foot,

Last Friday, 10-19-2007, my wife and I were fortunate enough to go on one of your tours. What a great experience! Even with the light rain, we found the tour to be very entertaining while at the same time enlightening and enjoyable.

We are locals. We will definitely utilize the “DC By Foot” tours when we have guest in town.

What a great way to experience the DC!!!

Ben & Brody, Thanks for a fantastic tour last Friday evening Nov. 2nd. My 2 daughters, ages 9 & 11 told their Dad, brother & sister that opted not to go on the tour because it was too cold, that they'd really made a big mistake not coming!!!! They loved the stories you told and have retold them many times already. It was definitely a highlight on our DC visit. We highly recommend your tour and braving the cold was definitely worth it!!! Thanks again.

brody & ben-
i can honestly say i've never commented on a business' website before, but after taking the dc by foot tour, i felt compelled to share what a great experience i had with anyone who might be considering going on it. this tour's unique twist is that you learn a little and laugh a lot! brody and ben's witty repartee keep the laughs coming and the pace moving. best of all, i guarantee you wll leave this tour knowing pieces of history that not even textbooks could teach you! who knew, for example, that thomas jefferson and john adams were so competitive with one another? my only requests would be that brody add a few more raps into the mix, and that ben come out of his shell a little bit. ;) all this to say, THANK YOU for an hour and a half of amusing treevia and lots of fun. i am very proud of you guys!

Hi Ben.

I was on your tour on Thursday April 3, 2008. I was one of the eighth graders with our moms.

I just wanted to say I had a blast and you made history come to life. Who knew the Washington Monument was 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall?

Absolutely entertaining and educational! Ben, you really know your stuff. We were impressed that you captured the attention of your tour group consisting of three 4 year-olds all the way up to numerous old folks, and everyone in between. You always made room for others to join. Our weather was cold and rainy but I had no thoughts of quitting because your antics and information were fasinating! Well done, hope your business continues to grow.

Ben, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour Friday, April 4th. (despite being Canadians...you know, one step removed from the British - ha ha!). Your enthusiasm for your company, history and tourists is infectious, and your knowledge, impressive. We've seen all the monuments before, but never in this light. We happily showed our gratitude at the end as it's one of THE best walking tours we've every been on, including Europe, the US and Canada. Franchise, franchise, franchise!!
Good luck with the business as you grow through word of mouth. Kim and Alan, Toronto, ON Canada

Hi Ben and Brody - on April 23rd, 2008, my son's school's first grade classes, (yes 6-7 year old boys and girls - about 75 of them!), got to experience your FIRST tour geared to such a young age and large group. I must say, as one of the many chaperons, you both did an INCREADIBLE job!!! My group had Ben for the majority of the time and the kids were really following what he had to say and stayed focus for practically the entire time. I was very impressed with that. I think us parents learned a lot to. Thanks for keeping the facts interesting and simple for the kids, and the funny stories and jokes were just right for the audience, child and adult alike. I would highly recommend your group tour to other schools in the region, not to mention tourists and locals alike. Thank you for all that you did to make such a beautiful day and special city a wonderful learning experience and happy memory!

Ben -
Just getting my two cents in to let people know that history can, in fact, be fun for first graders on the National Mall. You did a fantastic job with your first-ever bunch of elementary-school-aged field trip crowd. They laughed, they listened, and they learned a thing or two! More than I accomplish on most days around here.

Great tour today guys! Informative, fun, and even though the tour was larger than usual, you handled it like pros. Thanks for parking us in the shade when you could. Next time, I'll bring sunblock. And Brody, don't forget: "Assassination Vacation" by Sarah Vowell. I think you'll enjoy it.
Thanks again!

Hey guys! I took your tour last weekend with a friend, and wanted to give you another tidbit for your tour. :) When you mentioned Lincoln's hands and that one was tight to symbolize oppression and one loose and relaxed to reflect the new country, there is another theory on why sculptor Daniel Chester French designed it that way. French was very into sign language after sculpting Gallaudet, and designed the hands to sign "A" and "L" for Abraham Lincoln. :) I discovered this while researching French at the Library of Congress for a retrospective of all his Washington works. Feel free to add it to your tour! :)

Hi guys, we recently had an opportunity to stop in DC on our way back from Pennsylvania...this was the first trip for myself and my kids. My wife has been before and we agree DC By Foot is THE tour to "hit" in DC. We only had a couple hours to see sights...maybe pick one to explore and DCBF allowed us the opportunity to get interesting info and suggestions to help us make a decision. We decided to spend a little more time at the Lincoln Memorial and jump by the White House...which was not originally white as we learned on our tour. Thanks a bunch Joseph & Crystal from North Carolina.

We were only going to be in DC for three days, so we wanted to hit the major highlights during our short time. Despite the moanings and groanings of my kids & nephews (we have to WALK for HOW LONG??), we went on the "DC By Foot" tour and had a great time! Ben, our tour guide, was knowledgeable, engaging, and so funny! By the end the tour, the loudest compliments came from my teenage son & nephew...the ones who complained the most when they heard we were going on a walking tour. :) I highly recommend this tour!!

Ben made it look easy - his tour was interesting and funny. My family was visiting DC for the 1st time and we were trying to find our way around. Our sons are 10, 6 and 5 so keeping them entertained can be a chore. After the tour all the kids talked about was the Lincoln horse skid. Awesome job, keep up the good work and the positive learning experience!!!

Ben,
I was in a tour of yours on the
4th of july at noon. What an awsome tour! You said you were not sure how it was going to turn out with all the detours due to the festivities, and all the people we had to go through or around, but our group thought it was GREAT!! We really enjoyed all the history and facts about everything on the tour, and everything not on the tour you were asked about. The stories about the people of the past were very interesting. Your talks about the Vietnam War Memorial and the Korean War Memorial were Quite moving. I learned things about these two memorials that I have never heard before. The time went by so quickly! If the detours and crowds we a distraction, You never let it show, you just kept on going as if this was an ordinary day.Great Job-Anyone going to D.C.-This is the tour to take!Lots of Fun -
Thanks

Best wishes for the future! When you're sick of DC (though your enthusiasm about the nation's capitol was inspiring) we need you back in Boston!

we had SUCH a great time on the tour. truly the highlight of our trip. you guys were funny and informative (could that be combined to be in"fun"ative?) we will recommend you to both of our friends for sure. my son, maxx, loved playing thomas jefferson and we have begun to refer to the t.j. memorial as maxx's memorial.

we had heard a great story that you could add to your repertoire at s
signer's island... one of the portlier signers said to a much slighter in frame signer after they had all had their turn at the pen something to the effect that he was glad he was of heavier stature since when they were all hanged, he would certainly die more expediently than the smaller fellow who would sway in the breeze for a time. it presses the point that these guys really did expect that at any moment they might lose their lives for their act of necessary treason. they do deserve their own island. and a great kissing spot as well, you know that has to make them proud.

i have some great photos of ben leading the tour, if you would like to see them email me at leamarshall@mac.com. i will send them to you and you can use them anyway you see fit (consider it an additional tip)...

What a wonderful find! Ben was hilarious, he actually held our kids' interest and they both (age 10 and age 9) came out with a greater sense of history really taking place to real people than anything else we could've done for them. They really loved the stories about the animals/pets of the Generals in the war and all the little jokes that Ben made during the tour. They also, days later, even retold some of the stories and tales of the people discussed and the monuments to other people and to each other and still laughed at some parts of the stories and retained alot of information that we wouldn't have gotten anywhere else.

Skip the bus tours and do this one. You won't be sorry and you'll gain a whole different, more human view of the history of the U.S.

Been to DC 4-5 times in past few years as tourists. My husband and I took our 13 year old grandson to see the city. (Found out about these guys on-line.) Spread the word - this is one awesome tour. It was in the high 90's and Brody made sure we were in the shade as much as possible. We learned more on this tour than all of our 'on our own' trips. Remember - they work for tips. Very very disappointing to see more than half our group walk away w/o tipping. Brody was great!!

My family and I loved the DC by foot tour - it was fabulous! Ben was great, very enthusiastic, knowledgable and entertaining! The bright orange hats are a great idea - we were in a large group and it made catching up and following much easier. My only suggestion is that the World War II memorial is so amazing you should add a few extra minutes to the tour so people can really enjoy the details. We would have missed so much if it weren't for this tour - thank you!

We are a family of 8 with two adults and 6 kids. We did this tour as a spur of the minute thing to end a fabulous 18 day vacation. What a wonderful ending. Brody was soooo attentive and interactive with my kids...he even asked my daughter, Milan, a question which she got correct. She loves history and Brody's love for history was a great example and inspiration for how fun it can be. Brody presented Washington DC in a great light and seemed to really enjoy the city and his job. I recommend this to everyone and will come back in the future. Keep up the good work Brody!!! Just a suggestion...bring cash for a tip...

This is honestly one of the best tours I've ever been on. I laughed, I cried, I learned a lot! It was suited to all age groups and I know in our group there were kids of all ages and everyone was engaged. The explanation of the Viet Nam Memorial was so moving I was in tears. Our tour went over time but I could have continued for another hour or two...
It was a wonderful afternoon for our family, two young teens and two (cool?) parents. I recommended it to people I encountered in our hotel elevator and on the street. I cannot say enough about it. It was a fantastic experience.

Without a shadow of doubt, this is the best tour I have been on, anywhere, period. Our tour guide, Ben, was absolutely hysterical. He had me laughing from the minute we met up with him on 15th and Constitution. On top of that, the amount of truly interesting information he had to share about our nation's capital and history was truly astounding. My girlfriend and I are both native to the DC area, but we have never been exposed to the monuments in such a fun and insightful way. The fact that the tour is donations only makes it even all the more enticing. My only regret was not having more cash to give.

Great date activity...Great family fun...An absolute must for all tourists and locals.

I recently visited Washington, DC, with family and went on the walking tours around the monuments and Arlington. These tours were the highlights of our trip! The tour guides were amazing.
I especially enjoyed the tour around the National Mall. I appreciated our guide Eddie's knowledge of the monuments, memorials, and surrounding area and his enthusiasm for the history there. The tour was a nice mixture of interesting information, lively interaction, and quiet reflection of the many sacrifices made for our freedom over the years. I am looking forward to sharing some of what I learned with my elementary students in the fall.
These tours should be at the top of everyone's list when visiting Washington, DC.

I NEEDED to leave a note regarding my familiy's recent trip to DC. A last minute business meeting came up near DC so my family's vacation pans had to change. DC in August- not my first choice (hot & hunid), but boy am I glad we went for it. After some quick internet searching for DC tours, I came across your info and thought, 1.5 hour for a free tour of the Mall? I'll go for it. If it stinks then I'm only out a 1.5 hour of my life (in which I can still enjoy the suroundings)and no $. Well, let me just say that my family of 4 from WV was entertained, educated, inspired and in awe at Andy's simultaneously hilarious and moving commentary during our walking tour in 90 degree heat and bazillion percent humidity on August 20th. I have already recommended it to friends and have posted my comments on other travel planning sites.
Andy, thanks for making our touring trip so fun and moving all at once. We even learned that you can get personlized dollar bills from the Bureau (who knew)!
Leaving Andy a tip from each of us was the least I could do for such a great tour.

The tour Guide Andrew was quite the showman-providing interesting stories with very creepy delivery :) (a nice touch for any ghost tour).

The walking is very manageable-and we were able to see many aspects of the neighborhood surrounding upscale Georgetown which was def neat.

The tour concludes at the Exorcist steps-where many cabs are available to take you where you need to go.

I really enjoyed the monument tour with Eddie, it was excellent! I learned a lot and it was fun and engaging. I'll never know how he remembers all the facts! On Friday night, we went on the ghost tour with Andrew, and while the information was interesting, I could have done without the theatrics. They were corny and made me less interested in the tour. about half of the group left early for the same reason. Some people just walked away. It was my first time in Georgetown and was embarrassed to be in the middle of an upscale neighborhood with someone who was yelling about ghosts and spirits, and making people look out their windows.

Hi Eddie,

Tonight’s “More Than Just Monuments” tour was a wonderful experience of our trip in the Washington DC area. It was very interesting, enjoyable, and educational. We were actually on our way to a Metro station to go back to where we stay. But we ended up following your big group for 2 more hours until it was dismissed. After the tour, my daughters did not want to leave but they quickly climbed up the steps at the Lincoln Memorial to see where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech. My 7 year old daughter often said “This is a free country.” After your tour, freedom has a brand new meaning to her.

We will definitely recommend this great tour to our friends. Thank you so much!

Best Regards,
Jennifer, California

We truly loved your tours. It was very informative and the kids loved it. You did an excellent job educating everyone and kept it interesting. The Lincoln tour was incredible as well as the MJM. Next time I am in DC, I will go on the others. I am telling everyone about you guys. This is the best kept secret and it is free.

I hardly drop remarks, however i did some searching and
wound up here "LEAVE A FOOT NOTE". And I actually do have a few questions for you if you usually do not mind.
Could it be simply me or does it give the impression like some of the responses look as
if they are coming from brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are writing at additional
sites, I'd like to keep up with anything fresh you have to post. Could you make a list of the complete urls of all your public pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
